How will investing in a film make you money?

We are going to try and make this as simple as possible for you to understand and therefore simplified things slightly. The facts figures we will be using come from various sources such as the UK Film Council databases.

The revenue earned by a film comes from different chains such as Cinema, Television, DVD sales, Internet down loads and DVD rentals. Along these chains our partners such as the distributor will take their agreed percentage before any revenue makes it’s long journey back to Brushy Creek Films the producing company.

For our example we have used an average revenue stream for a £2,500,000 Film Production budget. This example shows how a £10,000 investment for a 10% share of the 25% of the total profit made by such a film.

We have rounded up the figures to the nearest million for our examples sake. All figures are stated in millions.

Film Budget: £2.5M

Cinema Revenue: £26M

Assuming US/Canada 42,000 screens, Europe 27,000 screens, Australia/Asia 18,000 screens and rest of world 6,000 screens.

Total paid by Cinema to distributor (less Cinema share 50%): £13M

Deduct Distributor fees 30%: 4M

Total paid to Producer: 9M

Home DVD (Worldwide)

Rentals (av £4.15p per rental) : £1M

After Sales: .5M

Total paid to Producer: £1.5M

Internet Downloads (direct form Producer) £.3M

Television (Worldwide)

Assuming Pay TV, Free TV – Total £2M

Agents fees: £.8M

Total to Producers: £1.2M

Other worldwide sales such as in-flight entertainment, royalties, product endorsements.

Total £.8M

Therefore total revenues paid to Producer: £12.8M

Less cost of production of £2.5M: £10.3M (100%)

Final Payment to Producer 5.15M

Payment to Financiers £5.15M

The £5.15M paid to Brushy Creek Films will be distrubuted as follows

50% to Production Company: £2.5M

25% to Production Partners £1.3M

25% to Investors: £1.3M

Therefore the £10,000 investment (10% of the Investors 25%) would pay out £130,000
